Hello,
I’m Sophia and welcome to The Cancer Cocoon. I have created this space for people who have been given a cancer diagnosis. I’m very familiar with cancer and everything that comes with it. I myself, have survived two different types of cancer.
In the last two decades I have guided thousands of others affected by cancer. From high profile business people, entrepreneurs with big companies, to parents with children, teens, complete (patchwork) families, partners and their loved ones and people who have to face it all by themselves. As a certified therapist and cancer counselor, my work is rooted in psychology, psychosomatics, hypnotherapy, EFT, breathwork and trauma-work. When appropriate, we add a little dash of philosophy or spirituality into the conversation, to contemplate the bigger life questions.
The cancer and ex-cancer patients I work with, come from all over the world, with diverse backgrounds, different ages, cultures, points of view and ways of living. I work with them in both; corporate & entrepreneurial business settings, as well as privately with families and children. Every now and then I give talks in cities like London, NYC, LA or Amsterdam and I teach various (master) classes at different academies.
In me, you will find a practical and down to earth realist, with the utmost respect for science and medicine. I’m also an open minded person, that appreciates contemplating the bigger life questions and our connection with everything around us, especially nature. For me, my connection with nature is all about tending to my bee hives, working in my (veggie) garden or walking the dogs in the age old forest behind our house on the countryside, where I live my private live with my loved ones.
My Journey With Cancer
The first time I was diagnosed with cancer (Hodgkin) it was the mid 90’ and I was a teenage kid and given a less than 10% chance to survive. After many months of treatments, things went from bad to worse. I was bombarded with; chemo, heavy duty medications, losing my hair, lot’s of radiation, having to say my goodbyes, a near-death experience that followed and lot’s of operations. After a quite some time, where so much kept happening, the tide finally started to turn. It had taken some years, but I was finally cancer free and able to go to University.
Many years later, after working in the corporate world, living abroad for years in London, New York and other cities. I decided to shift gears, I got all my degrees and opened my own practice. Not long after that, I was diagnosed again. Cancer came back to me in a whole new form. Breast cancer this time. I was in my early 30’s and a new cancer journey opened up for me, with many parts being disturbingly familiar. But a number of new and difficult decisions showed up as well. But again, I made it to the other side of it. For this I’m deeply grateful, more than I ever can express. This deep feeling of gratitude and peace has infused my life and I’m very proud of my beautiful strong body, with scars and all.
In my practice I guide and support cancer and ex-cancer patients. From young to old and their loved ones. I help them with their mental and emotional health during this challenging time. I teach them how to build and create mental and emotional fortitude for themselves. The Cancer Cocoon is the place that I wish was available to me when I was going through it all. I hope that The Cancer Cocoon will guide and support you mentally and emotionally on your journey with cancer.
Much Love,
Sophia van Sorgen
